Our Mission

We are dedicated to building people power, rooted in an Indigenized worldview, toward healthy, sustainable, & just communities for ALL.

Native Movement supports grassroots-led projects that align with our vision, that dismantle oppressive systems for all, and that endeavor to ensure social justice, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, and the rights of Mother Earth.

About Us:

Founded in 2003 out of Arctic Village, Alaska, Native Movement's initial campaign was to help build a collective Alaska Native voice for the recognition of Indigenous hunting and fishing rights. By 2007 Native Movement had become formally incorporated as a 501c3 non-profit and grown to a west-coast collective. Since then Native Movement has provided leadership and support for grassroots-led projects that endeavor to ensure Indigenous Peoples’ rights, the rights of Mother Earth, and the building of healthy & sustainable communities for all.

Theory of Change:

Native Movement understands that in order to make meaningful and lasting change it is critical to address root-causes that dismantle oppressive systemic power structures. Indigenous, Black, people of color, queer, women, working class, and grassroots leadership is necessary for lasting system-wide change to occur. Native Movement is focused on developing community organizing leadership, mass-movement building, and strategic political engagement built on social justice and healing foundations. Our work focuses on grassroots mobilization grounded in Decolonizing and Just Transition frameworks. A decolonizing framework builds recognition of colonialism’s destructive history and its current manifestations thereby giving us clarity as we seek to untangle and dismantle harmful systems of oppression. By understanding these roots, we are able to structure organizing campaigns that address the deep change that is needed and implement lasting benefits for all.

A Just Transition

A Just Transition Framework gives us similar understandings of root causes and a regenerative vision of the future while outlining a path of transition. Just Transition builds a common language across various sectors of work from which we can endeavor to build greater collective power. We firmly adhere to the Jemez Principles of Democratic Organizing and we know that Indigenous, Black, people of color, LGBQueer, Trans, Two Spirit, women, non-binary, and working-class people are the visionary and bold leadership the world needs. Native Movement is focused on increasing Alaska-wide community organizing capacity toward dismantling colonial systems of oppression and boldly reshaping a healing path forward.
